Fence

(2019)

Cardboard, gesso, and video installation

Returning home after being away for nine months, I began to realize a lot of changes to the scenery of the place I had grown up. A lot of homes in the area seemed to be bought up and re-built for much bigger mansion style houses, and all of the timeshare homes, surrounding the few remaining locals, had built white plastic fences around all of their buildings in a way that approached the long time locals spaces. This pollution of fences and mansion seemed to me to be almost parasitic in nature which I began relating heavily to how nature will often be forced to be relegated to concrete and metal barriers. With the analogy in mind I projected a warped video onto a cornered wall and placed a cardboard white gessoed fence that prevented the viewer from fully viewing the piece. This symbolized many things including the warped perception of a perfect life, the flimsy classist barriers that separate us, and the emotional effects of this watered down version of gentrification.

This piece was featured in the solo exhibition The Getaway City (2019), hosted by the Godine Family Gallery
