Past Shores
(2018)
Gessoed old beach towel, Ink, sand, and acrylic
The piece that would initiate what would later become the solo exhibition The Getaway City. While spending three months in my family house in the town I grew up in I became very intensely affected by feelings of the past and the nature of my upbringing. I came to a realization that my home town had shaped me much more than I thought it had previously. To this end I decided to begin working and writing about the connections of my childhood, my home, and how tourism was beginning to deteriorate the town I grew up in. This is where the phrase “From salt and sand, I grow past the shore” and the four portraits of myself growing up were realized onto one of my old beach towels, as to anchor myself to my upbringing while also acknowledging how different of a place I am in life.
This piece was featured in the solo exhibition The Getaway City (2019), hosted by the Godine Family Gallery
